Drone Pilot Quiz & UAV Skills Check

This page gives you a simple practice overview of the SIA security exams. It explains how the written and practical parts are structured, what topics are covered, and the kind of pass marks you can expect. Use it to understand the process and then test yourself with the questions below.

How the SIA Security Test Works

The SIA security test consists of multiple-choice exams and practical assessments designed to evaluate knowledge of laws, safety, and conflict management. To pass, candidates typically must score at least 70% (or 71% for some refresher units) on each unit.

Exam Structure and Content:

Unit 1: Principles of Working in the Private Security Industry: A 72-question exam with a hour 50 minute time limit, requiring 50 correct answers (70%). Topics include industry standards, legal regulations, and emergency response.

Unit 2: Working as a Security Officer: A 60-question exam with a 1 hour 30 minute time limit, requiring 42 correct answers (70%). Topics cover patrols, searches, access control, and equipment use.

Unit 3: Conflict Management: A 20-question exam with a 30 minute time limit, requiring 14 correct answers (70%). This focuses on de-escalation, communication, and recognizing warning signs.

Practical Assessment: Candidates must demonstrate skills like physical intervention (for Door Supervisors) or radio communication in scenario-based tasks.

Top-Up and Refresher Exams
For license renewals, the Security Guard Top-Up exam requires 25/35 correct answers (71%) in 55 minutes. The Door Supervisor Top-Up requires 25/35 (71%) for Unit 1 and 24/30 (80%) for Unit 2. These exams often feature scenario-based questions testing judgment on safety, reporting, and legal limits rather than just memorisation.

PRACTICE TEST QUESTIONS:

Write down the letter of each answer so you can total your score at the end:

1. What is the maximum legal flight height for most drones in the UK (including under 250 g)?
A. 500 m (1,640 ft) above the surface
B. 120 m (400 ft) above the surface
C. There is no fixed height limit

2. When operating near the public, which procedure ensures the best safety?
A. Overflights are fine under 50m
B. Use vocal alerts rather than distance
C. Maintain required separation and never fly over people

3. Which step confirms the presence of Restricted Airspace (FRZ) before takeoff?
A. Use official aeronautical maps or flight planning tools to check active zones
B. Assume clear status if no airports are nearby
C. Only check if flight exceeds 120m

4. What describes Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) in practice?
A. Watching the drone via the remote screen
B. Unfiltered eye contact with the UAV at all times
C. Observation via binoculars or optical aids

Drone Pilot Quiz

5. What is the protocol for drone operations near private property?
A. Weight under 250g allows free overflight
B. Flying is allowed if no camera recording occurs
C. Respect all privacy laws and minimize overflight of private land

6. Why must you verify a UAV's official class label and mass?
A. It determines authorized zones, subcategories, and safety distances
B. It helps calculate the maximum flight battery time
C. It only applies to indoor hangar operations

7. How do you respond to a complete GNSS (GPS) failure during a flight?
A. Overlook the alert and keep visual contact
B. Stay calm, use manual sticks, and land safely
C. Climb higher to reacquire a satellite lock

8. What is the priority when filming in residential or busy areas?
A. Physical range of the drone
B. Selecting the best angles for media use
C. Privacy, data laws, and necessity of recording people

Operational Compliance

9. How should drones navigate near high-speed motorways or urban roads?
A. Maintain a horizontal offset and avoid crossing moving traffic
B. Cross the center as long as height is 400ft
C. Shadow vehicles for surveillance

10. How are missions managed in high winds or low visibility?
A. Proceed if the aircraft stays airborne
B. Ignore weather for tactical necessity
C. Cancel or adapt the mission if safety limits are exceeded

11. How should flights be managed near colleagues and mission staff?
A. Fly over them since they are part of the team
B. Debrief them and maintain strict safety distances
C. Allow them to stand directly under the aircraft

12. How often should UAV flight manuals and safety guidelines be updated?
A. Repeatedly, to stay current with laws, tech, and threats
B. Only after a significant data loss or breach
C. Once during the initial equipment setup

Decoding Your Results

This assessment is a vital tool for verifying your proficiency in safe UAV navigation and procedural compliance.

By evaluating your responses, we pinpoint exactly where your knowledge of aviation safety standards may be lacking, providing you with a clear roadmap for refinement.
